  1.                          Guide for X-Word

  4. This application is shareware - you may evaluate it for 30 days. If you
  5. continue to use it beyond this time then you must register!
  6.  
  7. Introduction
  8. ------------
  9. X-Word allows you to create a crossword based on words and clues that you
  10. supply. You can control the size of the grid used, the fonts and border
  11. display.
  12.  
  13. Using X-Word
  14. ------------
  15. Load in the normal RISC-OS way. The main X-Word display will open, with a
  16. tool pane on the left side. Load Acorns !Help application for a summary of
  17. what the icons do, although many of them are self evident.
  18.  
  19. Borders
  20. -------
  21. NB. If you are using RISC_OS 2 then you will NOT be able to use borders.
  22.  
  23. Clicking on the Border icon button shows a list of available bordrs. These
  24. are read from the Borders directory with the main X-Word directory. You may
  25. add your own borders here, but they MUST be draw files.
  26.  
  27. If you have a directory of your own with borders you should use the
  28. DIRECTORY PATH icon on the tool pane to set X-Word to scan this directory.
  29.  
  30. You can, if you are using a single draw file, simply drag and drop the file
  31. onto the main display.

  33. Menu Options
  34. ------------
  35. A couple of menu options need explaining:
  36. a) Reset path - if you have changed the Border directory path (see above)
  37.    then selecting this will reset it
  38. b) Save as default - whatever you have created so far will be saved as the
  39.    default file. Each time you load X-Word it will begin with this work
  40.    already on screen. If you later wish to remove this open the X-Word
  41.    directory and delete the file called AZfault.

  43. Registration
  44. ------------
  45. The registration fee for X-Word is 5.99 - this will entitle you to be
  46. kept up to date about upgrades as they become available as well as removing
  47. the 'unregistered' windows that pop up. You will also receive additional
  48. borders as well as Do_Word, an application allowing you to do your
  49. crosswords on screen. To register make a cheque to M. Smith for 5.99 and
  50. print clearly your address as well as who you want the program to be
  51. registered to. Also write the name of the application on your note
  52. (ie X_Word).

  82. Shown below is a brief description (E & O.E) of applications by the same
  83. author. Virtually all are of an educational nature, running under the WIMP.
  84. Most work on RISC OS 2, all work on RISC OS 3. I have not tried them on a
  85. RISC PC, but they ought to be ok!
  86.  
  87. Geography:
  88. * Where & Grid - Designed for Key Stage 3, Where & Grid are two
  89.   complementary applications. They test locations of countries (Europe &
  90.   Africa), towns, counties (UK only) rivers, montains, bearings, four and
  91.   six figure grid references. Currently the set covers the UK, Europe
  92.   & Africa.
  93. * OS_Symbols - Designed for Key Stage 3, OS_Symbols tests knowledge of a
  94.   range of OS Map symbols. A particular symbol is displayed and the correct
  95.   description must be found - time limits can be set.
  96. * Forecast - Produce your own weather maps just like on TV with symbols and
  97.   isobars. Variety of maps supplied; wind chill can be determined.
  98. * Predict - Predict the weather for the next 24 hours by supplying data
  99.   such are pressure and wind direction.
  100. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game, where all the words are connected
  101.   with Key Satge 3 geography.
  102.  
  103. Science:
  104. * Circuit symbols - Tests knowledge of circuit and electronic symbols
  105.   against the clock.
  106. * Assist: Science AT4 - Produce a wide range of worksheets for topics on 
  107.   AT4. Each topic has a wide range categories including word searches,
  108.   crosswords, True or False, Anagrams and Missing words. Worksheets are
  109.   created from a databank, so they are different each time they are printed.
  110. * Assist: Equations - Produce four types of worksheets based on chemical
  111.   equations. Categories are Balancing equations, Missing product, Missing
  112.   reactant and Right or Wrong. Because a databank is used, worksheets are
  113.   different each time they are printed.
  114. * Assist: Periodic Table - Print a customised Periodic Table. Displayed data
  115.   can include mass number, density, boiling point, melting point,
  116.   radioactive isotopes, atomic radius, atomic volume, covalent radius,
  117.   ionisation energy, & electronegativity. Graphs and periodic trends can
  118.   also be produced.
  119. * Periodic Table - Click on a particular element to display relevant data. 
  120. * ArcMedia: Space - A simple hypermedia system on the Solar System. Designed
  121.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. Variety of NASA images.
  122. * Multiple Choice Chemistry - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  123.   pictures) covering GCSE Chemistry. Time limits can be set.
  124. * Multiple Choice Physics - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  125.   pictures) covering GCSE Physics. Time limits can be set.

  127. Word Puzzles:
  128. * Word Search - Application for creating word searches. Control over grid
  129.   size, displayed fonts, grid shape & borders is provided.
  130. * Do Search - Compliments the Word Search application. Data files from Word
  131.   Search can be dragged into Do Search, allowing the word search to be done
  132.   on screen
  133. * X-Word - Creates and prints crosswords from words and clues provided by
  134.   the user. Control over grid size, displayed fonts & borders is provided.
  135. * Do-Word - Compliments the X-Word application. Data files from X-Word can
  136.   be dragged into Do Word, allowing the crossword to be done on screen.
  137. * Anagram - Reconstruct the jumbled up word by solid dragging of the
  138.   letters. Hint feature is also provided.
  139. * Guess - Guess the word chosen by the computer. Hint feature provided.
  140. * Bottle - Hangman type game, but with bottles. Hints also provided.
  141. * Cloze - Removes words (user can determine how many) from a passage of
  142.   text. User must then reconstruct the entire text by entering words into
  143.   gaps in the text. Add your own passages of text easily. Summary can be
  144.   printed.
  145.  
  146. Picture Puzzles:
  147. * Blocksaw - Jigsaw type application, using blocks for the pieces. Accepts
  148.   sprite and draw files. Size of the grid can be varied to cover a wide
  149.   range of abilities.
  150. * Tile - Picture is broken into a series of tiles, and then the tiles mixed
  151.   up. The picture must be recreated by swapping tiles. Uses sprite or draw
  152.   files; allows the number of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty
  153.   levels.
  154. * Slide - Sliding block puzzle. Uses sprite or draw files; allows the number
  155.   of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty levels.
  156. * Rows n Cols - Recreate a picture (either sprite or draw) by sliding rows
  157.   or columns into their correct positions.

  159. Miscellaneous:
  160. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game for up to three players. Database
  161.   can be easily modified to include your own words.
  162. * Multiple Choice (General) - Multiple choice quiz, some with pictures. Many
  163.   general knowledge topics covered. Editor also available so you can create
  164.   your own tests.
  165. * Multiple Choice Maths - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  166.   pictures) covering GCSE Maths. Time limits can be set.
  167. * ArcMedia (Cats) - A simple hypermedia system on the Cat Family. Designed
  168.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. 
  169. * Word Tester - Tests knowledge of the correct word for numbers from one to
  170.   one hundred in various languages. Played against the clock.
  171. * Facemaker - Use your computer to design a face, then either print or
  172.   export as a sprite file.
  173. * Desktop Turtle - Create on screen graphics with a 'Turtle' within a
  174.   desktop window. Wide range of commands supported including numeric
  175.   variables as well as sprites and sounds. Other features include variable
  176.   line thickness, auto symmetry and backdrops.
  177. * Birthday & Today. Produce an A4 sized poster on events taking place in
  178.   history either on your Birthday or any particular day. Information
  179.   displayed includes Famous Birthdays on the same day, events, films, songs
  180.   and sporting events. Variety of borders/watermarks provided.
  181. * School CV & CV+. School leavers (CV) or sixth form students (CV+) can
  182.   quickly create a CV by entering data. Layouts can be chosen from a
  183.   predefined set, and fonts changed. DTP style output without having to use
  184.   a DTP application.
